Abstract

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book aims to help students get the most out of their personal development group work and other personal development activities to become the best possible counsellor their can be. Rather than just talking about personal development and personal development groups, it brings the subject alive by looking at student and tutor experiences. The book deals with an introduction to personal development and personal development groups generally, and introduces what personal development is and starts to look at the personal development group and why it is important in counsellor training. The book focuses to conflict and difficulties in personal development groups drawing on her research into tutor—student conflict to look at why conflict occurs and how it can be managed.
