Abstract

This introductory chapter sets the scene for the following chapters on politeness and impoliteness, briefly acknowledging the various ways in which (Im)politeness is conceptualised, and then discussing why a handbook of linguistic (Im)politeness is needed at this time. The structure of the handbook is overviewed, followed by brief discussion of where the field may be heading next.
