Introduction to Cell Migration

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

Cell migration is a fundamental biological process that supports and drives vital developments in humans. It drives embryonic growth and plays an important role in our ability to respond to damages as observed in wound healing or to external threats by foreign invaders as part of our immune responses. It follows that defective cell migration associated with embryonic growth, wound healing and immune responses may lead to developmental disorders or disease. The study of the cellular mechanisms and underlying structural components of cell migration is becoming increasingly of interest to scientists and clinicians alike to tackle the effects of deregulated migratory activities. This chapter gives an overview of the topics addressed in detail in the following chapters. This includes an introduction to the history of cell migration, why and how cells migrate and modes of cell migration and disease, allowing a brief overview of the chapters within this book. Also discussed briefly is how cell migration can be targeted to combat disease.
