Abstract

Photograph to contextualise Keenan Maliks article about When Sony announced that it was withdrawing its film The Interview after threats from hackers, my first thought was ‘Thank God Sony was not the publisher of The Satanic Verses.’ I was reminded of the Rushdie affair because of what the two events reveal about the transformation in attitudes to free speech over the past 25 years.
