Abstract

This chapter focuses on the type of garments that are more generally associated with the term knitwear, which includes sweaters, cardigans, knitted dresses, skirts, and outerwear. Knitwear production has come full circle with the aid of new technology in which whole garments are knit and mostly made up on the needle bed through a fully operational technique. The chapter discusses the range of fabrics that can be achieved by manipulating the stitches on both single- and double-bed machines. In micro size and many small-to-medium size enterprises, the knitwear designer is responsible for the entire design and production process. The knitwear designer therefore requires a sound understanding of all aspects of design and production including technological knowledge of materials and machinery. The chapter concludes with a discussion of resources for knitwear trends and words of encouragement to develop as a creative knitwear specialist.
