Abstract
The United Kingdom is made up of four nations: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Each has a decentralized government responsible for developing its own policies, including health policies. Advanced practice nursing has evolved in response to the specific needs of each nation. An overview of the development of advanced practice in each of these is presented in this chapter, with a summary of the successes achieved and challenges encountered during this period. Currently, title protection and regulation are not effective in the UK. However, many changes have been noted, notably the creation of Academies of Advanced Practice in England and Scotland to accredit professionals who practice advanced practice. In England, this concerns different healthcare professionals, not just nurses. Examples of advanced practice nurses who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and innovative practice patterns in the UK are presented in this chapter.
