Abstract

This paper focuses on the language (im)politeness as social practice from the point of view of its reflexivity. As we propose that something counts as polite because it is recognisable to participants as polite, talking about (im)politeness in an evaluative form is very important as it connects reflexivity to the metapragmatic awareness.
The study analyses different forms of metapragmatic awareness which could be the part of examining (im)politeness. We have focused, in particular, on metalinguistic, metacommunicative and metadiscursive awarenesss in relation to understandings of politeness. The paper also shows a great variety of examples and methodologies in order to prove how important the interdisciplinarity is in the (im)politeness research.
