Abstract

In this paper three Pareto optimal rectangular, flat pad aerostatic bearings were selected from a set of bearing designs with 256 members. The Pareto set was obtained by linking a multi-criteria optimisation code to a finite element code used to determine the load capacity, stiffness and flow rate of the bearings. The effect of introducing six different form errors on bearing performance were then determined by modification of the finite element model. It was shown that form error would have a significant impact on bearing performance with the greatest impact being on stiffness. It was concluded that a method of analyzing sensitivity to form error, supported by a computer code would be a useful design aid.
