Abstract
Neuromorphic and unconventional computing aim to replicate the adaptive, parallel, and energy-efficient information processing of biological systems. Achieving this functionality with sustainable, biocompatible materials remains a key challenge. Here, we demonstrate a protein-based colloidal computing platform using egg albumen interfaced with a microelectrode array (MEA) that simultaneously exhibits memory-like behaviours and synaptic-like potentiation and depression. Here, we demonstrate that these properties can be used to perform a wide range of Boolean operations that are spatially distributed and captured using our custom-made MEA. The substrate reliably produced recurring logic expressions such as ¬a∧¬b∧¬c∧¬d and a∨d∨¬b∨¬c, highlighting its capability for in-materio computation within a soft, bio-derived medium. This study establishes a conceptual bridge between synaptic plasticity and logic operation in biological materials, suggesting that protein-based colloids can serve as sustainable computational substrates for low-power, adaptive bioelectronics and hybrid neuromorphic interfaces.
