Abstract
The analysis of masonry structures located within historical sites presents a unique set of challenges, primarily due to their integration with neighbouring buildings. When subjected to seismic forces, these complex structures exhibit distinct behaviour compared to standalone edifices. This study conducts an in-depth examination of a simplified methodology for assessing the vulnerability of clustered masonry buildings, exemplified through a case study in Castelpoto, a municipality within Benevento (Italy). The analysis focuses on an existing masonry compound with irregular characteristics, comprising seven structural units (SUs). Notably, three SUs are placed in the heading position, two SUs are in the corner and the remaining two SUs are enclosed between two adjacent ones. The vertical structural elements have irregular masonry consistency, while the horizontal structures mostly consist of either timber or steel beams and masonry arches. For numerical analysis, a multiscale assessment approach is implemented. It first assesses the clustered building's overall susceptibility, before moving into the detailed interactions among individual SUs when subjected to seismic conditions. This method is intended to provide more detailed insights into the seismic behaviour of these interconnected structural units. Finally, the analysis recommends some types of retrofitting strategies to improve the predicted seismic performance of the complex building under investigation.
