Abstract

The classical residual and the wavelet techniques are applied on acoustic and vibration data for detection of micro pitting on a back-to-back experimental gearbox test rig and early detection of local tooth faults is analyzed. An advanced decision making technique based on the likelihood ratio is used for damage detection. The results indicate that acoustic technologies are very effective tools for early gear damage detection. Novel comparisons between • acoustic and vibration damage detection technologies • the residual and wavelet detection technologies were performed taking into account the following three criteria: the correlation between diagnostic features and pitting estimates, the mean pitting size of the first detection and the mean percentage of detections.
