Abstract

An excellent methodology has been evolved for the optimum sizing of a pipeline carrying powder filled capsules. Least cost principle has been used in designing such pipeline involving determination of optimum diameter of the pipeline as well as optimum spacing between successive pumping units. The detailed analysis with regard to transportation of three materials namely Coal (S.G. = 1.41), fly ash (S.G. = 2.0) and iron ore slimes (S.G. = 4.2) using capsule pipeline has been done. The variation of the hydraulic parameters such as friction factor and capsule velocity with throughput and Reynolds number has also been studied.
