Abstract

The effects of a laminated glass superstrate on both the radiation pattern and the impedance bandwidth of a microstrip patch antenna are reported. It is shown that nulls that appear in the radiation pattern of the antenna, due to surface wave effects, can be successfully eliminated by the use of a layer of resistive film. The bandwidth of the antenna is significantly increased to ~20% while the gain is maintained at 5-6dB.
