Abstract

Open a leadership textbook or click on any online introductory resource and you will come across a description or definition of leadership that will look something like the following: Leadership is the process of a leader influencing followers towards the achievement of a common goal. There are many different variations on this theme, but some essential ingredients persist. Chief among these ingredients is some causal relationship between ‘leaders', ‘followers’ and ‘goals'.
