Abstract

A European funded Project named SURFSTAND, which conducted a preliminary study on potential development of standards in the field of areal surface texture, has been completed. This study was finalized in 2001 and a presentation of the results was made during the CEN/TC 290 and ISO/TC 213 "Geometrical product specification and verification" meeting in June 2001, February and June 2002. It is acknowledged that the project progressed extremely well and successfully established a set of tools for numerical characterisation of a real surface topography, which includes: primary parameters, database format, tribological test and calibration programs. It was confirmed that the output of the SURFSTAND project contains material of considerable potential benefit to the development of a new standard for areal surface texture. The paper is briefly introduced the practical evidence and feasibility applications of the SURFSTAND project.
