Abstract

The railway industry has been significantly slower than the competing modes of air and road in taking advantage of mechatronics and health monitoring, although a number of possibilities are now “hot topic” research areas being considered worldwide. This paper describes some current research work and a range of opportunities ranging from “low level” (vehicle sub-systems) through to “high level” system wide benefits.
