Abstract

“This exhibition, entitled ‘Relationships between Architecture, Art and Nature on Naoshima, Japan: First Encounter’, presents part of a research project still in progress. The study was awarded a small grant by the DAIWA Anglo-Japanese Foundation. The project’s main aim is to document and analyse through direct experience the relationships between architecture, culture, art and nature in Naoshima, the location of the selected case study. Naoshima is a remote island located in the Seto Inland Sea in Japan, and it is well known for its numerous art installations and museums. The subtitle of the exhibition, ‘First Encounter’, highlights the focus of this first exhibition, namely my arrival on the island and my first explorations, discoveries, impressions and reflections. The exhibition is structured to tell the story of my first encounter with the island. My fieldwork on Naoshima allowed me to experience, identify, document, interpret and reflect upon aspects related to architecture, art, culture, nature and lifestyles, and how their multiple connections contribute to and enrich people’s lives.”
