Abstract

A comprehensive review of the current rail heat treatment systems in use has been undertaken to provide a comparative assessment of their efficacy to enhance the service life of rails. The properties of premium grade rail steels have been reviewed with reference to the known degradation mechanisms experienced in service. The plants having the capability to manufacture heat treated premium grade rails have also been reviewed to establish the range of cooling media employed and thereby permit the assessment of their efficacy of cooling. However, the design of the heat treatment equipment and the operational parameters are closely guarded intellectual property of the manufacturers and hence comparison of the various systems had to be based on the scientific principles governing the use of the various coolants
