Abstract

As the UK regulator for nuclear licensed sites, the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate (NII) requires the Sellafield site operator to demonstrate safe operation and management of the contaminated land inventory in accordance with the site licence conditions. In general, the Nuclear Site Licence Conditions apply in totality but there are some conditions which are more applicable than others for contaminated land. For example, Licence Condition 4 requires BNFL to control the storage of nuclear matter including radioactive waste on the licensed site. This paper describes the production of the first safety case for contaminated land by BNFL for its sites in the UK.
