Abstract

Many contrasting utopian visions have been offered by an array of writers and designers since Thomas More first coined the term in the early 16th century. The Chthonopolisis one of the most recent. Conceived by Nic Clear–architect, curator, now Head of the Department of Architecture and 3D Design at the University of Huddersfield–it is an underground city of the future that mingles architecture with science fiction. After tracing itshistorical precedents, Clear outlines his project which, with its sentient matrix and immersive-gaming approach, embraces the need to think beyond current knowledge when envisioning what lies ahead.
