The anti-transgender movement and intersex people

Research output: Contribution to specialist publicationArticle

Abstract

Recent research from the European Union shows sharp increases in violence and discrimination against intersex as well as against transgender people which is remarkable considering that intersex people are a largely invisible population. This article introduces the reader to the concept of intersex and gives a brief history of the anti-transgender movement. The main body of the article explores how anti-transgender violence and discrimination is inextricably interwoven with intersex wellbeing. John money’s influence on the medical establishment’s approach to management of intersex variations and how it relates to transgender experience is examined. The article concludes with a brief examination of the implications of the anti-transgender movement and the most recent iteration of the Trump administration and its implications for intersex childhood and parenting.
