Abstract

The paper presents the design synthesis and construction of a tubular linear, permanent magnet actuator for automotive applications. The application of soft magnetic composites in permanent magnet machines is discussed, since conventional lamination techniques are cost prohibitive for the tubular linear topology considered. The linking of analytic and finite element techniques in the design synthesis is presented along with characterisation test data from a prototype actuator constructed to validate the design procedure.
