Abstract

We report on the first of the new IRP1200 1.2m capacity CNC polishing machines produced by Zeeko, which are now entering service. These machines are primarily targeted at the large optics sector, and provide polishing of precision-ground surfaces, correction of form-errors, and smoothing of generated surfaces using hybrid 'grolishing'. In this paper we outline the fundamentals of the removal processes, then proceed to describe the architecture of the machines, as required to provide the necessary seven CNC axes of motion. Finally, we draw attention to practical issues of part-fixturing and alignment, cross-contamination, relationship with metrology, and handling.
