Abstract

Sapphnetics is an instrumental practice invented by Maria Sappho that operates through experiments with the electromagnetic noise fields of ferrous objects. The practice works primarily through the Sapphnetic gloves which Maria makes that turn the arm into a wireless cyborg appendage. Sapphnetics is a practice that mediates and disrupts utilising the indeterminacy of the design – the smallest of movements might generate the biggest of feedback. What is built is an ecosystemic loop between gesture, amplification, bodies, space and magnetic fields.

In this new instrument designed to work with the Sapphnetic process the gloves are used to interact with a large ferrous mirror. The mirror is equipped with a range of magnetic objects which are then interacted through the feedback ecosystem of the Sapphnetic practice.

This Sapphnetic mirror was developed and premiered at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival and the Perempuan Komponis residency at the Ruan Pamer An Planetarium, Taman Ismail Marzuki.
