Abstract

In July 2005 I stepped into a small, sweltering cassette shop on the main artery of the village of Kerambitan in West Bali. The shop’s owner was Made Pasek, a vocalist for a local heavy metal band and the brother of Nyoman Suadin, a noted gamelan instructor for several colleges and community groups on the East Coast of the United States—and my host for my first brief stay in Bali.
