Tinkering with Garment Pattern Grainlines: A Creative 'Conversation' Between Designer, Material and Wearer for Fabric Efficiency

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contributionpeer-review

Abstract

This practice-based research invites a creative exploration of garment pattern grainlines as a medium for reducing fabric waste, engaging with materials in ways that challenge conventional garment production methods. It centres on the imaginative and experimental potential of altering grainlines in cotton jersey garments, offering a new perspective on fabric efficiency and sustainability. This study presents grainline tilting not just as a technique but as a creative “conversation” between designer, material and wearer opening new possibilities for reducing fashion waste while fostering an embodied, imaginative, and serendipitous approach to design.
