Abstract

Tipping Points addresses climate change and increasing temperature of our atmosphere through the lens of receding glaciers. The pin in textiles hold layers of fabric together, but in this work, this is inverted, and it is the ice that holds the pins in a mesh like form. Just as glaciers carry rock debris, layers of ice and pins are built up to echo a double cloth that is woven separately and then becomes combined using a different warp and weft structure. The soundscape utilises recordings of wind and storms recorded in Norway as well as recordings of recordings of pins and ice. These are layered and interwoven using the same ideas of ice and double cloth to create an immersive sonic tactility.

Tipping Point was selected from a submission of over 300 entries for Textile Art Biennial BIEN 2025 https://layer.si/bien/en/kr/open-call-2025/. The selection panel included Severija Inčirauskaitė-Kriaunevičienė (LT), head of the Department of Textile Art and Design at the Vilnius Academy of Arts (VAA); Jana Mršnik (SI) Associate Professor at the Faculty of Design, Slovenia (University of Ljubljana); and Lovro Ivančić (HR) textile artist, researcher, and curator.
