Abstract

This chapter offers an overview of the evolving landscape of university rankings, beginning with a brief background on their development and an introduction to three major rankings compilers. It explores the growing prominence of rankings over the past two decades, driven by three transformative trends: the rise of generative artificial intelligence, the digital transformation of data collection and management, and increased global mobility and competition for talent (which has impacted higher education). The core of the chapter outlines key themes and challenges addressed in this edited volume, emphasizing their interrelated nature. The chapter concludes with a novel visual representation that maps the connections between these challenges, highlighting the complexity and interconnectedness of university rankings research.
