Abstract

Virtual space is a critical aspect of design and presents many possibilities in the contemporary digital age in a range of arenas including entertainment, communication, and other industries, such as healthcare and the built environment. In this chapter various practices and processes are discussed including virtual worlds, three-dimensional (3D) modeling, and 3D printing. While the chapter predominantly focuses on virtual spaces in digital media, the physical environment is also considered, including the impact that the ubiquity of digital culture has on contemporary notions of space and place. The divide between the real and the virtual is explored and contested.
