Abstract

This paper examines form of power and resistance as well as their limitation among fans across the spectrum of popular media and culture. Examining conceptualisations of power in the what we have described ‘first wave of fans studies (GRAY et al. 2007) the paper examines claims of empowerment among media consumers and fans through acts of negotiation and appropriation and explores such practices with particular reference to gender. Qualifying the ability and capacity of fans to counter hegemonic cultural formations, the article correlates forms of empowerment to different forms of productivity. This discussion is in turn contextualised by examining the interplay between power and identity in
fandom in reference to Pierre Bourdeiu’s (1984) sociology of consumption.
