Abstract

First, the key conclusions of these chapters in respect of some of the main problems of underclass theories are reviewed. The critique examines: social and economic change and the exclusion of youth; the complexity of processes of exclusion and the diversity of groups who become excluded; the extent of an underclass culture amongst excluded youth; and methodological issues in youth ‘underclass’ research.
