Abstract

The Department for Transport within the British Government is duty-bound to minimise the British Transportation Sector's detrimental impact on the planet. Part of the solution is persuading more Britons, whom are susceptible, to shift from using a Private Car to the more sustainable option of Public Transportation. The key objective of this research was to propose a suitable mathematical model that would allow the Department to select and implement appropriate policies that induced a significant percentage of Britons to make the shift. A Hotelling game theoretical model proved to be a useful method of testing policies. A concept game allowed one to identify that the model obtained realistic estimates of what the percentage change in Britons rationally choosing to use Public Transport would be if a specific policy was implemented. The recommendation of this research is for the Department for Transport to expand the Hotelling game model into an Instrument Game.
