This study provides the background to the rationale and follows from a research project for re-engineering a process Safety Management System that turned a BowTie into a BowTie digital twin. A digital twin can be a digital representation of a process that mirrors a specific process of a real system; in this case the risk space associated with a process. The BowTie model is well suited to present the risk space in as a digital twin as it maps out the risk-space together with real-life controls. The rules and processes for of designing and operating a BowTie are now changed.
