The Curlew is a literary fiction novel, following the life of Gil, and his relationship to The Curlew: a cottage in the Yorkshire Dales. The cottage has been in Gil’s family since its construction in the 1670s. Gil’s parents, however, moved away from their rural working class roots in the early 1960s. Gil is brought up in the suburbs of a large town, to which – even as a child - he feels no connection. The submitted, opening, chapters – 1971 and 1977 – set out Gil’s childhood connection to the cottage and its world. It is clear he has a deep affinity for the place and the natural environment around it. He’s at home there. This closeness provides the backdrop for the losses later in the novel.
