Abstract

This study aims to investigate the role of sense of responsibility (SoR) and guanxi on the relationship between job embeddedness (JE) and organisational citizenship behaviour (OCB) of academic staff in higher education institutions (HEIs) in Vietnam. To accomplish this goal, three major objectives have been established. The first is to investigate independently the relationship between JE and OCB. Second, to examine the direct impact of SoR and guanxi on the relationship between JE and OCB separately. Finally, the mediating role of SoR and guanxi on the relationship between JE and OCB are explored simultaneously.

The study employs both online and paper-based surveys questionnaire at two times data collection with an eight-month interval and follows a positivist philosophy and a deductive approach with a quantitative method. First, a critical review of the literature was conducted to assess SoR, guanxi, JE, and OCB. Then, before testing the hypothesis, this study went through several data evaluation stages. A total of 414 valid responses from more than 30 Vietnamese HEIs were received. Next, the partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) was used in this study to analyse the collected data.

The findings of this study revealed that there is no relationship between job embeddedness and OCB. However, both SoR and guanxi fully mediate the relationship between JE and OCB. Besides, the results of this study supported both multiple mediations of SoR and guanxi on the relationship between JE and OCB.

This study suggests that higher education institutions need to focus on SoR and guanxi of employees who choose to stay with an organisation to improve their OCB. The empirical findings might be interesting to managers and practitioners in Vietnamese HEIs, assisting them in making efficient use of their resources and talents.
